Dublin have become the last winners of the Intercounty Championship after defeating Waterford in the final over the Glashedy Links at Ballyliffin. However, a hint given at the presentation ceremony indicated that the event, sponsored by Golfsure, may resurface in another form. "This is the last season that the competition will be played in this form but it is possible that a different format may be introduced later," reflected GUI Ulster secretary Brendan Edwards.

The winners first ended Antrim's hopes of success with a semi-final 31/211/2 win and then eased out Waterford, taking three of the top four matches. It was Gary Cullen (Beaverstown) who clinched victory for Dublin with a 2 and 1 win over Eddie Power in a battle of former Irish champions. Cullen has won the Irish Amateur Open while Power, now playing out of Kilkenny, twice took the Irish Close title. Eddie Power's brother Peter was also on the wrong side of a 2 and 1 result as he lost to Eoin O'Sullivan (The Island) while Noel Fox (Portmarnock) had set the scene with a 2 and 1 win in the top match against Gavin McNeill (Waterford).
