Billy Nugent armed himself with a new driver and shot the lights out to win the coveted Gallup Grand Final at West Waterford on Sunday. Players from 16 different clubs contested the event, but local knowledge proved a huge asset as Nugent and another former West Waterford captain, Tommy Butler, took the top awards.
There was extra tension as the pair were playing together and fighting point for point for 14 holes. However 15-handicapper Nugent put in a great finish to end four shots clear with an excellent haul of 44 points.
With 30 single-figure players in the field it was always going to require a low round to win the gross category and Jason Law produced it. The one-handicapper from East Cork went around in one under par to win by two from club-mate Liam Butler.
