DAVID JONES had a dream debut in the Ulster youth team defence of the inter provincial championship at Clandeboye.
The home side suffered something a fright in the morning foursomes which were surprisingly shared with Connacht. Jones was not used; but was brought in by team manager, Garth McGimpsey, for the afternoon singles. And the one handicapper from City of Derry responded with a four birdie burst when he beat Gavin McGranaghan of Galway four and three.
Junior international Rory Leonard led the cavalry charge when winning the top singles by two and one against Connacht senior player, Nigel Howley. Ulster ran out 6-3 winners and meet Munster in today's second round. Leinster slammed Munster 7 1/2-1 1/2 and laid the foundations - Killarney student, Danny Sugrue, salvaged some pride for Munster when beating Alan Murray of Greystones by two and one.
