Ireland coach Mick Doyle - who guided Ireland to their last Triple Crown triumph, in 1985 - was scathing in his condemnation of the IRFU's decision to terminate the contract of Warren Gatland as head coach to the national side.

"I think it is absolutely appalling and one of the worst decisions they (the IRFU) have made. Unless Gatland made some outrageous financial demands, he should have been told to carry on.

"I mean, look at Wales and the fact that they are paying Graham Henry £250,000 sterling and he hasn't managed half the results that Gatland has achieved. In fairness to Gatland he coached during what were difficult times for Irish rugby and, although mistakes were made along the way, we had now reached a point where we won four out of five matches in the Championship and are competitive against the best teams in the world.

"He has been successful. When was the last time we beat France and England in the same season. I was absolutely staggered when I heard the news at lunchtime. I found it very hard to believe but now I just feel sad. And how is Gatland rewarded? His contract is terminated. I've nothing against Eddie O'Sullivan and wish him well but I am very, very saddened by these events. I'd love to know who made this decision and why.

"This is terrible. I feel very sorry for Irish rugby and its continuing development if decisions like these can be made. I wonder if the IRFU believe that this represents the wishes of the Irish rugby supporters whose interests they represent."

Former Ireland outhalf Eric Elwood admitted that he was "stunned" when he heard the news. "I'm very sorry to see Warren go as he is a friend as well. In the last 12 months we have beaten France twice and England so it's fair to say he has been a bit unfortunate."
