ULSTER UNDER-21 FC FINAL: Down 3-11 Derry 1-14: DOWN AND Derry produced a thriller in Saturday's Ulster U21 Football final at Casement Park, before Down snatched victory with a goal in injury time.
Ryan Kelly's fisted finish, from a Packie Downey lob, gave Down the title after a fine game which saw the scores level eight times.
"It was great open football and an exciting game to play in," said Down captain James Colgan. "Derry showed great fight in the second half against the wind and, for a while, I didn't know what way it was going to go."
Despite playing against a stiff breeze in the first half, Down went in at the break 2-5 to 0-8 ahead with Paul McComiskey hitting the roof of the Derry net right on the whistle after a six-man move.
Half-back Conor Garvey grabbed Down's first well-worked goal in the 14th minute.
A shock goal by Seán Leo McGoldrick in the 38th minute and a point by Paul McVey put Derry back into the lead against the wind and they went two points up before Cathal Magee and McComiskey (free) levelled the action again on 51 minutes.
But there was no way back from Kelly's crucial winning goal.
