Christy O'Connor Jnr had cause for a double celebration when he returned to Mount Wolseley golf club on Sunday night after retaining his Senior British Open title at Royal Co Down. Christy is President of the Mount Wolseley and his wife Ann is Lady President and Sunday was President's Day.
Christy's prize of antique dining furniture was won by Jimmy Byrne who shot a nett 67 off an 11 handicap. Jimmy had three shots to spare over David Dowling with Simon Ronan taking third place on 71. Seamus McDonagh won the gross with a 78.
The previous week 21 players qualified for the Captain's (Ger Kilcoyne) prize over the final nine holes and 16 handicapper Padraic Bailey led the field home on 166. Bailey took a 13 shots lead into the final nine holes and comfortably held on to beat Jimmy Doran, Vincent McCormack and Tom Stapleton. Michael Nash won the gross.
