World Champion Ken Doherty, handed over the World under-21 Championship trophy to Marco Fu as the event came to a successful close on Saturday evening at the closing ceremony in Carlow. Doherty, who won the tournament in 1989, may well be seeing more of the Hong Kong man in the future as the 19-year-old aims to turn professional next year.
His 11-7 win over Belgium's Bjorn Haneveer was very impressive. Having secured an 8-4 lead overnight, Fu went into the final session on Saturday afternoon needing just three frames for victory. And a 94 clearance in the 15th frame after the two had shared the first two, left Fu 10-5 in front.
Haneveer, ranked 190 in the professional rankings, then applied the pressure with a century break followed by a 92 clearance to leave Fu in some bother.
Haneveer broke down in the 18th frame, with the score on 4414, and after Fu had removed the last remaining red from the side cushions, the colours proved a mere formality as he made it back-to-back wins for Hong Kong.
