DREW DOCHERTY believes he can overcome massive mental and physical barriers to win the WBO bantamweight title at Mansfield on Saturday. The 30 year old Scot returns to the ring three months after a British title defence resulted in the death of James Murray.
He meets Puerto Rican Daniel Jimenez who, eight days after that tragedy, surprisingly outpointed WBO holder Alfred Kotey of Ghana. Docherty himself had previously been stopped in four rounds by Kotey and accepts he is very much the underdog.
But after agonising long and hard about whether to continue boxing, he insisted yesterday: "I cannot wait for the first bell to go. The Murray family urged me to carry on. They welcomed me into their house and said I was not to blame. They made me feel a lot better, and everywhere else there were no negative comments.
"I never want to forget about James Murray. I just want to for get about - what happened that night. Boxing is my livelihood. It is the only thing I have with which to support my family."
Docherty is glad of a second world title chance straightaway - and prefers it to be away from home.
