PETER LOWTHER, the manager with the Irish women's Federation Cup team at the Israel Tennis Centre this week, had to admit to being a little disappointed with the draw made yesterday for Group Two, which starts today.
Lowther's team of Gina Niland, Lesley O'Halloran, Phillipa Palmer and Clair Curran have been drawn with strong sides and must face Denmark in today's opener.
"We have got to win today to be in with a chance of emerging from the group," said Lowther. Denmark proved too strong for Ireland in the European Nations last year, winning 3-0.
Ukraine, who have players inside the world's 200s, will be Ireland's opponents tomorrow. Iceland are the only team in the group which Ireland have beaten in recent times. Malta are the other team in Ireland's group.
Gina Niland and Lesley O'Halloran have been named by Lowther to face the Danes in singles play today. It will be difficult for our girls," said Lowther.
