BASKETBALL:UL EAGLES returned to winning ways as they managed a win away to Moycullen on Saturday evening. UCD Marian opened their double-header weekend with a win over Belfast Star 71-60, however they failed to beat DCU Saints yesterday afternoon.
Neptune inflicted double-header heartbreak on Belfast Star, as the Belfast outfits’ poor run of form continued into the new year, while Killester managed a three-point win over Cork side, UCC Demons, 82-85.
DCU stay top of the Northern Conference table following their sixth consecutive league victory. Coach David Donnelly was delighted with the win. “It was a good win, we didn’t always play great, but our bench players made a difference,” he said.
Jermaine Turner and Killester bounced back following their two-point defeat to DCU last weekend. “It was important for us to get a win today ahead of the cup clash,” said Killester coach Darren O’Neill. “We are happy with the way we turned the game around, and this gives us confidence as we look forward to next weekend.”
WIT Wildcats suffered their third consecutive defeat as UL Basketball Club maintained their 100 per cent record in the Nivea Women’s SuperLeague, while Team Montenotte Hotel Cork secured a 22-point victory over Ulster Rockets, to keep the pressure on league leaders UL in the Nivea Women’s SuperLeague.
Elsewhere, 11890 Killester maintain their league position while gaining momentum ahead of their cup semi-final clash against Dublin rivals DCU Mercy in Cork next weekend. DCU Mercy enjoyed a comfortable win over Liffey Celtics while Meteors got the year off to a good start with a win over Oblate Dynamos.
“It’s a very competitive league this season, and I’m sure Glanmire are waiting for us to slip-up. There is no room for error, but we have to focus on ourselves,” said UL coach James Weldon.
