Winning comes easily to the Denver Broncos now that they have the formidable Terrell Davis to complement John Elway, and they trounced the Miami Dolphins 38-3 in the play-offs.
Elway was virtually a spectator as his running-back put Miami to the sword. Davis, who had gained only 29 yards when the Broncos lost 31-21 to the Dolphins last month, was quicker and faster as he rushed for 199 yards in 21 carries. With Miami missing key defenders the Broncos moved the ball along the ground at will, scoring on their first three drives.
"This was as focused as we have been," said Elway, who finished with 183 yards and a 28-yard touchdown to Rod Smith early in the fourth quarter. And Miami's coach Jimmy Johnson said: "Denver played like they'll repeat as Super Bowl champs."
The Broncos now play the New York Jets, who beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-24 yesterday with two touch downs apiece from Keyshawn Johnson and Curtis Martin, for the American Football Conference championship.
In Atlanta the Falcons welcomed their coach Dan Reeves back from heart surgery with a stirring 20-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, whose runningback Garrison Heart broke a leg on the first play of the game.
The 49ers used to beat the Falcons regularly but Atlanta have been transformed by Reeves into one of the league's best teams, led by Chris Chandler at quarterback and Jamal Anderson at runningback. "To get to this point is beyond our wildest dreams," said Reeves.
