LIMERICK's George McGill, currently on a four-year American scholarship, celebrated his call-up to the Irish Davis Cup squad with an impressive win in the Carslberg Irish Close tennis championships at Donnybrook last night.

McGill was in frugal mood after winning 12 games in-a-row against Jamie Stafford to advance to the last 16.emerged unbeaten along with John Doran, who will be making a return to the national squad as, a result.

McGill appears to be finally living up to his earlier promise as the Irish under-18 champion, and looks certain to do better than his number six seeding in the Irish test suggests.

James Pringle, who was involved, earlier in the trials, retired after only three games against Richard Morris after having difficulty getting used to an unfamiliar racquet.
