Bord Failte, main sponsors of the Donegal Irish Women's Open, have made a formal complaint to the Ladies European Tour over the behaviour of Laura Davies. It arose from the player's assessment of Letterkenny golf club as "the worst course I've ever played."
Local members were deeply offended by the remark, especially in view of the tremendous effort and expense they put into preparing their course for the event. And Bord Failte chief executive, John Dully, reflected these feelings in his words to tour officials.
"We told the Tour that we in Bord Failte were very disappointed that one of their leading exponents should have spoken in such an ill-considered fashion," he said yesterday. "We would have expected a player of Laura Davies's experience to have taken a broader view."
Dully's reaction came as no surprise to the LET, who were seriously embarrassed by Davies's remark. It now remains to be seen whether they will take action against the former world number one, who is clearly their greatest asset in attracting badly-needed sponsors.
