GMIT0-11 UCC0-9:GMIT BOOKED a place in the next round thanks to superb shooting from Niall Darby at Mervue, Galway, yesterday. Darby – a nephew of Offaly's 1982 hero Seamus – kicked four points against the wind in the second half.
GMIT led 0-7 to 0-2 at half-time but a UCC revival, led by Cork’s Brendan Jer O’Sullivan, was not enough. UCC reduced the margin to a goal three times but Darby responded each time. Points from Hugh Curran and O’Sullivan ensured it went to the wire.
