MUNSTER SCHOOLS' SENIOR CUP Crescent Comprehensive10 Castletroy College 3:CRESCENT COMPREHENSIVE progressed to the semi-final of the Munster Schools' Senior Cup at Dooradoyle yesterday.

It was a poor contest despite the best efforts of both sides to move the ball about and Castletroy, winners two years ago, will regret not opting to kick penalties in the last 10 minutes when they were well on top.

They were held up short a few times and, following repeated infringements in the scrums, they forced Crescent to offend to such an extent that the outstanding number eight Jack Donovan was sent to the bin.

Indeed it was Donovan who created the opening try for Crescent after 27 minutes. He led the drive which saw flanker Padric Ryan get the touchdown in the corner.

Try number two came three minutes from the interval.

Again it was Donovan who broke in midfield and several players handled before outhalf Larry Hanley got in but Diarmuid Dee was unable to convert.

Castletroy had to wait until 15 minutes from the end for their fitrst score, a penalty by Barry Neville who had been unlucky with two previous efforts.

Donovan, Jack Dineen and Ryan shone in the pack for Crescent with halfbacks Michael D’Arcy and Larry Hanley also doing well.

If Castletroy had played as well in the first half as they did in the final quarter the result might have been different.

Michael Dooley, David O’Brien and Enda Carroll did well in the losers’ pack with Neil Cronin and Seán Moran forming a solid halfback combination.
