Veteran off-spinner Peter Such and John Crawley, who scored a century in the Test that Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets on Monday, received the nod from the England selectors yesterday for the 17-man squad to tour Australia this winter.
Bookmakers were not impressed by the squad or the loss in the one-off Test, with William Hill pushing England's odds out to 1 1/2 from 5/1 and making the hosts 1/3 on to retain the Ashes. A drawn series is rated at 7/2.
Such (34), and Crawley won their places over leg spinner Ian Salisbury and batsman Graeme Hick, who has to make do with the one-day competition in Bangladesh.
Such played the last of his eight Tests against New Zealand at Old Trafford in 1994.
Kent seamer Dean Headley, overlooked since England's defeat by South Africa at Lord's earlier this summer, has also been selected but Andy Caddick has failed to make any of the winter squads.
