COASTAL BLUFF proved a well backed flop in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot but can bounce back in the Anthony Fawcett Memorial Handicap at York today.
David Barron's sprinter looked worthy of the gallons of ink used in punters' notebooks after landing a valuable Ascot handicap towards the end of last season from a bad draw.
So it was not surprising he was so well fancied for the Wokingham when the weights were first published. However, not for the first time, the Ascot draw conspired against him and he could manage no better than 3th of 29 to Emerging Market.
Despite that midfield position, Coastal Bluff actually ran very well, showing up at the "sub" head of affairs until it was obvious to Jimmy Fortune that the task was too big.
Easing him up in the closing stages did no harm to his handicap mark or his well being and he should now be spot on for a crack at this before the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood.
Another who should be doing his bit to uphold the value of the Wokingham form is Ascot fourth Green Perfume. Paul Cole's four year old takes a step up in distance of a quarter of a mile in the WWAV North 10th Anniversary Stakes. But with no strong pace guaranteed he can make use of his superior finishing kick.
Green Perfume actually started a well supported favourite, for the Ascot handicap and ran a fine race in defeat to finish fourth under a big weight. He has proved before that he stays a mile.
Three Hills looks a live one in the Tim Hodgson Key To The Door Rated Handicap. Barry Hills's Danehill colt, a half brother to Irish Oaks winner Bolas, won a nine runner maiden at Doncaster by a length and three quarters from Berenice.
With Freedom Flame well back in third bolting up in a hot HQ handicap on Wednesday the form looks gilded.
. Kieren Fallon wild face the wrath of the Jockey Club disciplinary committee on two counts next Thursday. As well as looking into the reasons why he failed to gain medical permission to resume riding after being declared unfit last winter, the committee will inquire into why he did not meet them last Wednesday.
Fallon did not keep his 9.39 a.m. appointment after experiencing traffic problems en route to Portman Square, the day after he partnered Dazzle to victory in the Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket. "We still have to get hold of his agent and organise the timing but the rearranged inquiry will be on Thursday next week," said spokeswoman Julia Cook.
"When he is here we will look at the reasons for his non attendance yesterday, as well as the original matter.
