Pat Cosgrave partnered his first winner when Perugino Lady landed the Carlingford Maiden in fine style at a very poorly attended Dundalk meeting yesterday.
The 17-year-old from Banbridge, Co Down, looks a name to note for the future. The Kevin Prendergast-trained filly was always travelling well but Cosgrave waited until the two furlong pole before making his move. His mount responded instantly and eased clear inside the final furlong to beat Wonder Will He by six lengths.
Jim Bolger has his string in top form at present, and he teamed up with stable jockey Kevin Manning for a double with Viscaria and Calladine.
Bolger moved onto the 55 winner mark for the season when Calladine defied a 10 lb penalty in the Collon Handicap.
The Erins Isle colt was recording his third win in five days when stretching clear in the straight to beat Kickham's Princess by nine lengths.
Kieren Fallon began his 41/2 month Hong Kong stint with a bang at Happy Valley yesterday. Fallon got off the mark at the first time of asking on Gaylord in the Adelaide Handicap.
It was a case of so near yet so far as Central Park saw victory snatched away in the closing stages of the Foster's Melbourne Cup at Flemington yesterday. Frankie Dettori attempted to make all on the Godolphin substitute but the four-year-old's heroic run came to no avail as Rogan Josh (5 to 1) flew down the outside to give local trainer Bart Cummings an amazing 11th success in the two-mile Group One event.
Melbourne Cup (Group One) £677,122: 1. Rogan Josh (J Marshall) 5-1; 2. Central Park 50-1; 3 dh Lahar 40-1; 3 dh Zazabelle 501. Also: 7-2 favourite Sky Heights (17th); 9-1 Travelmate (5th); 30-1 Yavana's Pace (12th). All 24 ran. 1/2l, 1/2 neck, dead-heat, 1l. (J B Cummings).
