Cork take southern comfort

Thurles yesterday was indistinguishable from a championship Sunday

Thurles yesterday was indistinguishable from a championship Sunday. Hot, sunny weather, cracking atmosphere and a huge crowd of 32,890 (plus all the children admitted free of charge) lent an air of expectation to the National Hurling League final between Cork and Waterford.

Both teams are up-and-coming but it was Cork who took the prize with a seven-point win despite being under intense pressure up until the last 10 minutes. It was the county's 14th NHL title, two behind Tipperary at the top of the roll of honour.

In the long run, the counties each had something to be happy about. Waterford emerged with their improving form still intact and every reason to look forward to the coming championship, whereas Cork have now won a national title with a young team and can concentrate on their away meeting in Limerick in the Munster championship in a fortnight's time.

Diarmuid O'Sullivan, the 20-year-old winning captain, rounded off his victory speech by telling the jubilant crowds that he'd see them in Limerick in two weeks.
