Cookstown set up final with Pembroke

MEN’S HOCKEY: COOKSTOWN WILL meet Dublin’s Pembroke Wanderers in the Irish Senior Cup final scheduled for April 26th

MEN'S HOCKEY:COOKSTOWN WILL meet Dublin's Pembroke Wanderers in the Irish Senior Cup final scheduled for April 26th. The Ulster side defeated Belfast's Annadale 3-1 at Coolnafranky to secure their place in UCD in four weeks time to seek the game's oldest trophy.

One of the in-form teams at the moment, Cookstown put three goals past Annadale to just one in reply.

Thomas Hutchinson, Ivan Steen and Andy Barbour grabbed a goal each for the home side with Annadale’s Ian Hamilton scoring his team’s lone strike.

Cookstown, who have not been in the Irish final for more than 20 years, also continued Annadale’s woes of performing well provincially in picking up Ulster titles by the handful but not being able to do it on the national stage.

Now undergoing team reconstruction, they have still not won one the senior cup.

Three Rock Rovers saved their weekend as well as a top four place in the league with a 1-0 win over Corinthians yesterday, Peter Blackeney scoring the winner in the first half.

The win makes up for Rovers big slip up on Saturday, when they went down to Monkstown 4-3.

With the league hastening to a close, Rovers are secure after yesterday’s win and Monkstown are now also very well placed for a deserved top four place.

Pembroke held their top position on the table with a Saturday 2-1 win over Corinthians leaving the Whitechurch side little to show for their weekend’s work.

Looking back they may see their meeting with Pembroke and Rovers over one weekend as a tough ask so close to the end of the season but one where their chances of a top four finish probably slipped away.

At the bottom UCD beat Kilkenny 2-1 but stay at the bottom of the table even though both are on the same points.

Railway Union, who are placed third from the bottom are now well clear of the other two with 16 points.

IRISH SENIOR CUP: semi-final: Cookstown 3 (I Steen, A Barbour, T Hutchinson), Annadale 1 (I Hamilton).
