A bookmaker will lay odds on almost anything, but by the middle of Open Week at Gort it would have been hard to get a bet on Alan Devlin winning the gross prize in any of the competitions. The three-handicap son of club secretary Sean Devlin returned the lowest score on four consecutive days. His run began on Monday with 37 stableford points, followed by 33 on Tuesday, 72 gross on Wednesday and 34 points on Thursday. Alan Devlin runs the club shop so he had a busy and profitable week on and off the course. Rory Fitzgerald of Tramore was another multiple gross winner, with scores of 36 and 37 points in Open events at Youghal.
