World Cup: Despite protests from South Korea, Japan vowed yesterday to put their name first in domestic promotional material for the 2002 World Cup finals to be co-hosted by the two rival nations. The two neighbouring countries made an agreement under which the official title in English is "2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan."
However, the most bitter wrangle came to the fore when Japan's organising committee, JAWOC, tried to change the order to Japan/Korea on its Japanese-language application forms for tickets for the finals which start on May 31st, 2002.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has apologised to South Africans for the fiasco that surrounded their unsuccessful bid to host the 2006 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has rejected reports that he is set to take charge of the Japanese national team for the 2002 World Cup finals.
Olympics: A unified Great Britain football team could go for gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Simon Clegg, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, has held talks with the English FA over the possibility of fielding a Great Britain team, British newspapers reported.
