FRANK CLARK is the new Manchester City manager following the dramatic resignation of Phil Neal last night. Clark's appointment was confirmed by City secretary David Halford.

Clark, the former Nottingham Forest boss, will meet the Manchester City players and backroom staff this morning before holding a press conference at Maine Road after lunch.

City issued a statement last night through Halford. It said: "Manchester City Football Club are very pleased to announce the appointment of Frank Clark as its manager with effect from 29th December 1996.

"By mutual agreement Phil Neal has tendered his resignation and the board of directors would like to thank him for his efforts in the difficult and unforeseen circumstances."
