HENRY CECIL, currently fighting out a thrilling climax to the Flat trainers' championship with Saeed bin Suroor, notched his century of winners with a double at Nottingham yesterday, helping champion-jockey elect Pat Eddery to a treble in the process.
The Warren Place trainer moved onto the 100-winner mark for the year, the first time he has broken three figures since 1992, when Fascinating Rhythm got off to a victorious start in the EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
The stoutly-bred daughter of Slip Anchor, whom Cecil trained to win the Epsom Derby in 1985, went to the front when asked to improve by Eddery approaching the final furlong and was eased down to beat Brave Kris by a length and a half, earning a 33 to quote from Coral for the 1997 Vodafone Oaks in the process.
Cecil is attending the Goff's Sales at Kill but his assistant Simon Sweeting said: "Pat was delighted with her temperament and she looks like a filly for next year.
"She has always looked like a pretty useful animal and she has beaten fillies with some good form."
Cecil moved onto winner No 101. and Eddery to his treble, when Torremolinos got off the mark at his third attempt with an all-the-way four-length victory over Raise A Prince in the second division of the Notts County Maiden.
Cecil also supplied the favourite for the first leg in Sea Wedding but the Groom Dancer filly, sent off at 6 to 4, could only manage third behind Peter Chapple-Hyam's Smilin N Wishin.
The middle leg of Eddery's trio came with the success of John Dunlop's Castan.
Returning from an absence of 11 weeks. the bay took up the running entering the final quarter mile and showed plenty of resolution to hold Classy Chief by a neck.
"He's had a little break and has come back great." commented Dunlop's travelling head lad Robert Hamilton.
