Cavan Gaels created a little bit of history in Belfast yesterday when they won the Ulster Club Minor Football Championship with a five points win over the holders, Slaughtneil from Derry, at St Paul's GAC Complex.
The Gaels became the first Breffni team in the 18 years' history of the competition to win the Jimmy McConville Cup. A five-star second-half performance from full forward Richard Graham helped the Gaels to this excellent victory. Slaughtneil led 2-3 to 1-3 at the break before Graham took over after the restart when he grabbed a personal total of 1-5, his goal being a real gem.
The 17-year-old left the defence flat-footed to hammer a drive past Slaughtneil goalkeeper Mark Kelly. That was in the 45th minute and it shot Cavan Gaels into a 3-6 to 2-6 lead - Tom McCormack snatched their second goal in the 36th minute for a 2-6 to 2-5 lead. Bernard Bradley levelled the game at 2-6 each in the 40th minute but the losers scored only one more point before the end as Graham added three points to his blistering goal.
