THE failure of Cavan football, manager Donal Donoghue and, his co-selectors to name a team last night for the deferred National Football League tie with Derry at Kingscourt on Sunday is curious.
The team was named over a fortnight ago for the original fixture which was postponed because of bad weather. In that team was Fintan Cahill who has since come into the spotlight as one of the players alleged to have played illegally in last month's New York final.
It seems that the Cavan management are awaiting clarification of Cahill's position. It has been denied that the player appeared before the Cavan
County Board to explain the New York allegations.
Key players in the Donegal panel - Manus Boyle, John Ban Gallagher and Damien Diver are under similar suspicion regarding the New York final. Significantly, they have been withdrawn for the time being from the county team.
Armagh's Kieran McGeeney has also been left out of the county team, apparently for the same reason.
Still it was felt that Cavan could have produced a team last night if only to accommodate the programme printers, even if this meant including a couple of AN Others. A team is expected to be announced this evening.
