WESLEY College overcame Mount Anville 2-1 after extra time, in the AIB-sponsored Minor A Leinster Cup final at Grange Road yesterday. With the match level 1-1 after the full 50 minutes, the deciding goal came three minutes into the first half of extra time, courtesy of a superb strike by Anna Carson.
The match was of exceptional quality, with Wesley showing great presence of mind both with their passing and their use of the whole width of the pitch. Indeed, their overall superiority allowed them to dominate the match, so it was a surprise when Mount Anville scored against the run of play - Rachel Assaf converting from a short corner two minutes into the second half.
Wesley replied soon afterwards when Rachel Stewart scored from open play, however despite controlling the play, they had to wait for that extra time winner to settle the issue.
Mount Anville had more satisfaction from the Junior B final, when they beat Loreto Beaufort on penalty flicks. The match was scoreless after extra time and Mount Anville eventually won by four penalty strokes to three.
In the Intermediate A final, a last minute goal by Loreto Mullingar was enough to give them the honours.
