Cobh Ramblers booked their place in the third round thanks to a superb 75th minute strike from winger Willie Bruton at Capco Park yesterday.
But CYM know they have only themselves to blame for at least not forcing this tie to a midweek replay. The Leinster Senior League side squandered a host of clearcut chances in a one-sided first half and Cobh made them pay the penalty after the interval.
First striker Aaron Jewell shot wide when well placed and then Tony Kavanagh wasted another opportunity after a perfect cross from Jewell on the right. Later, midfielder Chai Thian had a header brilliantly pushed over by Cobh keeper John Donegan. Thian almost broke the deadlock seconds before the interval but could only look on in disbelief as his 12-yard effort rebounded off the crossbar.
With the wind in their favour in the second half, Cobh looked much more composed and it came as no real surprise when they took the lead with just 15 minutes remaining. A clever ball from Mark Clifford over the top of the CYM defence allowed Bruton to take possession 30 yards from goal. After slipping past Ray O'Malley, he cleverly shot into the corner of the net from 12 yards.
