Bray Wanderers and Waterford United booked their League Cup quarter-finals places last night after 1-0 victories over UCD and Longford Town. Bray's winner at the Carlisle Grounds came after 28 minutes when UCD captain Aidan Lynch brought down Glen Brien to concede a free 25 yards from goal. Kieran O'Brien struck the ball relatively well but a big deflection wrong-footed UCD goalkeeper Barry Ryan.
Any chance UCD had of getting back into the game ended after 69 minutes when central defender Clive Delaney was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Jered Stirling's goal booked Waterford United's place in the next round at Strokestown Road.
Waterford took the match-winning lead on 23 minutes after a foul by Longford captain Wesley Byrne on Jason Kabia. Stirling took the direct free-kick and curled the ball into the top left hand corner of Aidan Smyth's net.
Then, three minutes before the break, Shay Zellor got on the end of Byrne's free-kick only to see his header deflected wide.
Three players face a one-game suspension from the National League on or after Tuesday, September 21st as a result of being sent off - Robert Forde (Kilkenny City), Kieran Foley (Galway United) and Colin Fortune (Athlone Town).
Bray Wanderers' future home fixtures will be switched from Sunday to Friday night (7.45 p.m.), starting with the First Division game against Home Farm/ Fingal on Friday, September 24th.
