The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have been told by its legal advisers that last Friday night's light welterweight semi-final in the national senior championships was in fact a noncontest.
The bout was between Cork's Seanie Barrett (Rylane) and Mark Wickham (St Anthony's-St Patrick's). The winner was to meet Francie Barrett of Olympic Galway in Friday's final.
Barrett was adjudged the winner of the contest by 9-8, but the first round was not scored by the computer which had broken down after about a minute. The St Anthony's-St Patrick's club lodged an objection to the result on the grounds that the association was in contravention of its own rules by allowing a verdict based on a mixture of jury and computer voting.
The contest is likely to be reboxed and may be refixed for Friday night as part of the finals bill. The final may go on in conjunction with the Ireland-US international at the National Stadium on March 26th.
Snooker: Ken Doherty defeated Nottingham's Michael Holt 5-0 in the first round of the £255,000 China International at the JC Mandarin Hotel in Shanghai yesterday.
Doherty put together back to back contributions of 115 and 129, but the latter effort could easily have reached 142 had he not jawed the pink in attempting a power shot for position on the final black.
Hockey: Mount Anville took the Kate Russell trophy by winning the ILHU All-Ireland schools tournament at Dangan, Galway, yesterday. Mount Anville secured the title with a 10 success over Mount Mercy College, Cork, with a goal on 19 minutes from Lisa Byrne.
