Rod Wallace steered Bolton into the quarter-finals of the League Cup last night after a penalty shoot-out. The former Rangers striker stroked the ball beyond Paul Jones and edged them past their Premiership rivals.
It was Bolton's seventh successful spot-kick of the night and came after Chris Marsden's effort had been superbly turned away by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Bolton had twice taken the lead through Dean Holdsworth and then Michael Ricketts. But Southampton grabbed goals through Kevin Davies and Tahar El Khalej.
Bolton took the lead in the 54th minute when Akinori Nishizawa was dragged back by Paul Williams. Holdsworth stepped up and confidently sent the penalty kick into the corner beyond Jones.
Saints drew level in the 81st minute when sub Kevin Davies tucked the ball home after Marian Pahars and Beattie had linked up.
Bolton regained the lead in the 109th minute when Ricketts grabbed his 11th goal of the season, but Saints drew level two minutes later through El Khalej.
