LEAGUE OF IRELAND PREMIER DIVISION Cork City 0 Bohemians 2:BOHEMIANS RETURNED to the top of the Premier Division last night, albeit temporarily. With Shamrock Rovers not in action until tonight, Bohs have a one-point lead after defeating Cork City at Turner's Cross.
For Cork, it’s been another eventful week off the field as the club stumbles from one financial disaster to the next. Supporters’ trust Foras met FAI representatives in Cork yesterday to discuss the situation, as the pressure mounts on chairman Tom Coughlan to step down.
The Leesiders narrowly avoided another winding-up order this week when Gareth Farrelly dropped his compensation case against the club. Nevertheless, banners calling on Coughlan to end his association with the club were present in abundance.
Bohemians made two changes to the side that started last weekend’s 4-0 win over Drogheda United. Manager Pat Fenlon had to plan without Owen Heary and Jason Byrne, so they were replaced by Anto Murphy and Glen Crowe.
And it was the visitors who dominated the opening period. Glen Crowe went closest for the Gypsies in the 23rd minute before they eventually made the breakthrough seven minutes before the interval.
Cork goalkeeper Mark McNulty misjudged a Killian Brennan cross from the left and Ken Oman rose highest to head the ball home. Anto Murphy should have doubled their advantage shortly afterwards but his header from another Brennan delivery went narrowly wide.
However, the second goal did arrive on the hour mark when Kevin Long turned Brennan’s low cross from the right into his own net.
Killian Brennan, who was a constant threat for Fenlon’s side, had a shot saved by McNulty in the 75th minute.
And approaching full time, Paddy Madden struck the post with an effort from a narrow angle as the visitors coasted to an easy victory.
