BLACKROCK ran in seven tries to summarily dismiss the challenge of a gallant Presentation Bray in the first round of the Leinster Schools' Junior Cup, at Donnybrook yesterday.
This was a display of textbook rugby, with plenty of fluid movement, support play and a hat trick of tries by winger Conor Buckley. Indeed, all but one of the tries came from the backs.
Blackrock's onslaught began as early as the third minute when Paul Drew touched down in the corner. The game was over as a contest after 15 minutes, with the score at 17-0. Captain Tony O'Donaghue crossed the line while Buckley also opened his account during this period. Two further tries followed, from Buckley and Gary Brown, before the break. The five tries, and two Alan Dalton conversions, left Presentation 29 points down at the break.
Presentation, who were well served by captain Stephen Hickey, Gareth Kelly, Brian O'Brien and Robert Robinson, played better after the break, but never looked like making the breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Alex Cahill and Buckley, once again, added to Blackrock's try count. A Dalton conversion and fine drop goal completed the rout.
