BOHEMIANS made no comment last night on the two-month ban handed down to midfielder Gareth McGlynn as a result of the betting offences he admitted to having committed while at Derry City, but the club is set to launch an appeal against the severity of the sanction over the coming days, writes Emmet Malone.
McGlynn acknowledged that he had placed bets on a small number of games, none of which involved City.
But he insisted that he had not at any stage been in a position to influence the outcomes, all of which, he said, had gone against him.
The FAI’s disciplinary committee nevertheless imposed a ban from April 30th to June 29th.
That means the player could be unavailable for up to a dozen games, including high-profile league clashes with St Patrick’s Athletic, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk, as well as up to two League Cup games and Bohemians’ first outing in the FAI Cup.
Colum O’Neill, a member of City’s technical staff during McGlynn’s time there, who admitted a number of similar offences but who had also placed bets on games involving the club, received a ban of the same duration.
