No, we won't gloat about insisting last week that Payne Stewart represented fantastic each-way value at 50 to 1 to win the US Open at Pinehurst No 2 - but it is a hard act to follow and this week's field for the Compaq European Grand Prix at Slaley Hall in the north-east of England just doesn't have the same magical appeal.
Nevertheless, given his current form, Darren Clarke's presence is sure to generate some interest and, assuming he has recovered from the jet-lag and his exertions stateside, he is tempting enough at 8 to 1 favourite to make it back-to-back wins in England after his success in the English Open prior to his departure for the United States.
A number of players who failed to get invites to compete in the US Open are back playing competitive golf this week, among them Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam, while Andrew Coltart, who was forced to pull out of the major due to injury, is also back competing.
Padraig Harrington, who has been plying his trade quietly and efficiently on the circuit this season, is on offer at 40 to 1, but our each-way gamble for this week is New Zealander Greg Turner who is also priced at 40 to 1 and who has shown some decent form in recent weeks.
