GEORGE BEST has been voted the greatest British footballer of all time pipping Stanley Matthews, with Best's former Manchester United team mate Bobby Charlton third.
The accolade comes in a poll by Royal Mail Stamps to mark Euro 96. Five other stars of yesteryear Dixie Dean, Bobby Moore, Duncan Edwards, Billy Wright and Danny Blanchflower were also nominated by the public.
The latter quintet, all deceased, will be depicted on a special set of Football Legends stamps on sale in post offices in Britain from Tuesday May 14th.
As tradition dictates that members of the Royal Family are the only living people who can appear on the British stamps, Best is to be honoured inside Royal Mail's official First Day cover, to be issued with the stamps.
. Bruce Grobbelaar has been dropped from the Zimbabwean national squad to give younger players a chance, coach Marc Duvillard said yesterday. The newly appointed Swiss coach said Grobbelaar (38) would not play in Zimbabwe's first World Cup qualifier against Madagascar next month nor feature in any other games under his control.
