Those of us who remember Lee Trevino partnering Seve Ballesteros in a two-club challenge around St Andrews could be forgiven for considering the match somewhat mundane. Still, there is an inescapable appeal about the Latin partnership of Supermex and Sergio Garcia. They will be teaming up in a televison challenge against Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, scheduled for Bighorn GC in the US next July. The winners will split $1.2 million, the losers share $500,000 and $300,000 goes to charity.
By way of illustrating how the rich get richer, this will be the fourth such money-spinner for Woods, whose only competitive appearance with Nicklaus was in the first two rounds of the USPGA Championship at Valhalla last year. He beat David Duval at Sherwood CC, California, in 1999; lost to Garcia at Bighorn in 2000 and partnered Annika Sorenstam to a mixed foursomes win over Duval and Karrie Webb last summer.
