BOXING NEWS:BELFAST'S PADDY Barnes has disappeared completely off the world rankings table in the light-flyweight class.

The World Amateur Boxing Association, AIBA, yesterday updated their world rankings – the final update before the Olympics.

And 2010 European champion Barnes, who was ranked number six only last month, has vanished from the top 33 table in the light-flyweight division.

Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the last Olympics, Katie Taylor, John Joe Nevin, Michael Conlan, Adam Nolan and Darren O’Neill will represent Ireland in London.

Four-time world champion Taylor, who was 26 on Monday, is in number one spot – a position she has occupied for the last six years – in the lightweight class on 3,200 points.

Her nearest Olympic rival in the updated rankings is Russian southpaw Sofya Ochigava, who is at number three on 1,400 points. Turkey’s Gulsum Tatar, who won’t be at the Olympics, is number two.

Cavan BC bantamweight Nevin remains unchanged at number four in the 56kg class, but Kilkenny middleweight O’Neill has dropped four places to seventh.

Belfast flyweight Conlan has improved three places to ninth while Nolan is not currently ranked by AIBA in the welterweight class.

AIBA ranking points are accumulated from the Olympics, World Senior and Youth Championships, continental championships and Olympic qualifiers over a two-year rolling period.

Barnes won gold at the 2010 European Championships in Moscow and bronze at the 2012 Olympic qualifiers in Trabzon, Turkey.

World number one ranked bantamweight Anvar Yunusov has been invited to take part in the “AIBA Road to London (2)” three-week training camp which begins in Cardiff tomorrow.

The Tajikistan fighter, who could meet Ireland’s John Joe Nevin at the Olympics, is one of 40 male 2012 Olympians invited by AIBA to what they describe as a “gruelling” training camp.

Both Nevin, who is ranked number four in the world, and Asian champion Yunosov, claimed bronze at the 2011 AIBA World Senior Championships in Azerbaijan.

Four female Olympians, one of which includes Oceania champion Alexis Pritchard, have also enrolled for the “AIBA Road to London (2)” camp.

Meanwhile, the Tunisia team – which includes their Olympic squad – will wrap up their training camp with Ireland at Dublin’s National Stadium tomorrow.

Meanwhile, undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury takes on 38-year-old Vinny Maddalone at the Hand Arena in Clevedon, Somerset, on Saturday night.

The 24-year-old Irishman has been criticised for vacating the British and Commonwealth titles rather than face the mandatory challenge from Liverpool’s David Price, now the new champion.

“I just felt Price wasn’t ready for me since he has faced nothing like the quality of opposition I have been in against.

“A five-fight blitz starting with Maddalone gives me a better chance of building up to challenge one of the Klitschkos.”
