Brazil are in trouble with FIFA after it emerged, rather belatedly, that they fielded an overage player at the 1997 under-17 South American championships - Sao Paulo striker Sandro Hiroshi's playing documents stated that he was born in 1980, when, in fact, he made his earthly debut in 1979 (all of which made him a year over the age limit for the tournament). Brazil could now be stripped of their under-17 title but FIFA also have it within their power to ban the senior national team from all competition, as part of their punishment of the Brazilian federation. But, what are the chances, we wonder, of FIFA being as severe on Brazil as they were on Mexico in 1988 when they banned them from the 1990 World Cup qualifiers for using overage players in the qualifying round of the 1988 World Youth Championship (thereby conveniently removing the USA's chief rivals from the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying section and all but guaranteeing their safe passage to Italia '90. . . where, it was reckoned, their presence was essential if the American pubic was going to show any enthusiasm for USA '94)? None? You're probably right.
