THE five-year-old Al Mohaajir may have failed to register a victory in any of his four races this season, but he has been running so well in events of a high quality that he should be capable of taking the Platinum Stakes at Fairyhouse this evening.
Although only four are due to go to post it is still by far the most interesting race on the card and it should also attract the most betting. Perhaps Wandering Thoughts, who only returned to action at Galway last week after a lengthy absence, may not yet be at her best, but both the three-year-olds, Ahkaam and Deynawari, are live contenders.
Kevin Manning produced Al Mohaajir on the rails in a Group Three event at the Curragh on his most recent start and for a few seconds it appeared as if he would pose a real threat to the English challengers, Restructure and Bin Rosie, but he could not quicken and had to settle for fourth place.
The blinkered Akhaam, who could never close with the leaders, was still only just over a length back in sixth place - a good effort considering he was having his first run since Leopardstown back in April.
Deynawari had his only run of the season on that same Leopardstown programme, dropping out of contention over a furlong out in the race won by Deed Of Love. His absence since would suggest that there were valid excuses and certainly on his juvenile form, including an impressive win from Ceirseach, he has every chance.
A problem with a small field such as this is that it may loiter until the straight, which would turn the race into something of a lottery. However, if the pace is adequate, Al Mohaajir should have the beating of his younger rivals.
Kept to five furlongs on her only two starts to date, Petite Princess, a Dayjur filly, should not be troubled by the longer trip of the Ratoath Stakes and is preferred to Danccini.
Gerrydardis, who could not do anything about the late burst produced by the runaway winner, Calisar, at Galway, receives a considerable amount of weight from the fancied runners in the Littlepace EBF Handicap Qualifier, and, with Eddie Ahern also claiming, could go close.
Shernadeed has not reappeared since finishing a good fourth to Pegwood in an 18-strong field for a Curragh in April. If she can find that form in the Derrinstown Apprentice Series Handicap she could see off the challenge of Health and Wealth.
