Ajax step up efforts to recruit Jol

FA Cup fifth round replays: Nottingham Forest v Tottenham City Ground, 7.45, Sky Sports 1 Ajax are stepping up their efforts to lure Martin Jol. The Dutch champions said they will speak to their shortlisted candidates this week and, though they did not name the Tottenham head coach, he is known to be their first choice.

Jol said yesterday that he was "very happy" and "fully committed" to Tottenham, but Ajax have not given up hope of taking the former Dutch international from Spurs, where he has been in charge for less than four months.

Ajax want him to succeed Ronald Koeman, who resigned last week after they went out of the Uefa Cup to Auxerre. They are so keen to get Jol that they are willing to abandon their traditional structure of head coach and technical director and give him wide control of affairs, similar to that which he enjoyed during a successful spell at RKC Waalwijk.

For Forest, former Wales defender Andy Melville has told their bright young things to savour the big stage tonight.

Centre-back Melville (36), said: "I am coming to the end of my career and these are the kind of games you look forward to. There are lots of young lads in the squad and they should make the most of it.

"The only place to play is in the Premiership or against Premiership players. So they should thrive."

Forest are unbeaten in six matches and Melville has been in place for the last four since arriving from West Ham.

"We have not been too bad," he said. "We are in a dogfight but we're doing a professional job. I have noticed that people are winning the ball more and are looking to express themselves.

Midfielder James Perch could return to the team as David Friio is cup-tied. Either Marlon King or David Johnson will replace striker Scott Dobie, who is ineligible.

For Spurs, central defenders Ledley King and Noureddine Naybet both have groin injuries and are doubtful.
