England and Arsenal defender Tony Adams looks set to unleash a new soccer controversy by accusing Glenn Hoddle of a series of errors during the World Cup.

In a new book, he says Hoddle encouraged Paul Gascoigne to drink the night before he axed him from the France '98 squad and humiliated David Beckham at training.

His controversial views are made known by The Sun, which is serialising his book Addicted.

As for Hoddle's treatment of Beckham in training before the match against Colombia, Adams says: ". . . we were practising a free-kick routine where one player flips it back to Becks to volley.

"He was struggling and Glenn, to the disquiet of the boys, said: `Obviously, you're not good enough to do that skill'."

And Hoddle was wrong to encourage Gascoigne and the players to drink the night before naming his World Cup squad, he says.

"Gazza was an ill man and Glenn did not understand properly the illness of addiction.

"Glenn encouraging him to have a drink on the Saturday night was not the best thing - not that Gazza needed encouragement."
