EVEN a cursory glance at Aberdeen's goal columns this season would lead anyone to conclude that tonight's UEFA Cup match against Brondby is likely to feature regular net bulging at both ends of the Pittodrie pitch. With 11 for and eight against in four European outings, the Scots clearly have a knack for giving both sets of supporters reasons to cheer.
Against formidable Danish opponents, however, they may have to be a little less cavalier than usual. Brondby, arrived in the north east yesterday boasting nine internationals in their regular line up. They include eight Danes and one Norwegian, the defender Dan Eggan.
It is an indication of their capabilities that Lars Olsen, who captained Denmark in Euro 96, is unable to command a place. With Kim Vilfort and John Jensen, formerly of Arsenal, in midfield and the prolific Peter Moller in attack, Brondby have a dangerous look.
It was Moller who scored the goal which eliminated Liverpool from last season's UEFA Cup. They would have made the Champions League this season but for conceding two goals in the last five minutes against Widzev Lodz in their qualifying round.
Still, Roy Aitken, the Aberdeen manager, is more likely to have lost sleep because of a stomach upset which kept him off work yesterday than any dread of Brondby. Famously combative as a player with Celtic and Scotland, Aitken is not easily intimidated.
