It is barely 3 cms high and 10 cms wide but this week became one of the most expensive pieces of real estate in sports advertising. Michael Schumacher was paid £5 million for this small space on his baseball cap by DVAG, a German management firm, who have the rights for the next three years. It confirms that Schumacher is one of the highest paid stars in world sport and at 30 already earns the car company an estimated £60 million a year for spaces on his racesuit alone - for which he receives a £5 million cut. That is on top of his £17 million salary.

The DVAG deal is surprising in that it is for his cap, worn only before and after races, and not his helmet which attracts more exposure. Canny enough though, Schumacher's cap is the only part of his kit for which he receives the entire sponsorship revenue.
