THE magnetic pull of the Olympic Games in Atlanta this summer will be a good deal stronger for 41 athletes - excluding the track and field contingent - who had their participations ratified by the Olympic Council of Ireland yesterday.

Equestrian Games and sailing disciplines dominate the initial selections, although it is felt the Irish team's numbers could rise to over 60 when the track and field squad is confirmed. The Games start on July 19th.

The equestrian team will number 11 (seven three day eventers, four showjumpers and one dressage), although the actual personnel has yet to be decided, while there will be a record 10 sailors.

European champion Michelle Smith, who is considered one of Ireland's best hopes for a medal, will spearhead a four strong swimming team which also includes Marion Madine, Earl McCarthy and Adrian O'Connor.
