Róisín Ní Riain claims second gold medal at European Para Swimming Championships

18-year-old from Limerick adds 100m backstroke title to 100m breaststroke she won earlier in the week

Ireland’s Róisín Ní Riain claimed a second goal medal at the European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira on Wednesday night.

American Paralympic champion Gia Pergolini won the race S13 100m backstroke final in a time of 1:05:75, with Ní Riain taking gold as the first European to touch home in 1:06:96.

It was the third medal and second gold of the championships for the 18-year-old from Limerick, with three events still to come. Having won silver in the 100m butterfly on the first day of action, she followed up with gold on day two in the 100m breaststroke.

Ní Riain is back in the pool on Thursday morning for her 400m freestyle heat where she will attempt to reach yet another final. In the evening, the Irish pair of Nicole Turner and Dearbhaile Brady will both complete in the 50m freestyle final.
