Radio broadcaster Niall Boylan to run for Independent Ireland in European elections

Broadcaster Niall Boylan has become the latest figure to announce their candidacy in June’s European Parliament elections, where he will seek one of the four Dublin seats being contested.

According to a notice on the website of the Dublin County Returning office, Mr Boylan will contest the election on behalf of the Independent Ireland party, founded by TDs Michael Fitzmaurice, Michael Collins and Richard O’Donoghue.

An official announcement is expected on Monday.

Mr Boylan, who is a critic of the Coalition’s immigration policy and most recently of the EU Migration Pact which the Government intends to opt in to, hosts a late night talkshow on Classic Hits FM.

He has also been critical of the planned hate speech legislation and electric cars among other topics.

Former RTÉ journalist Ciaran Mullooly will seek a seat for Independent Ireland in the Midlands Northwest constituency.

Mr Boylan joins a range of other candidates seeking a seat in Dublin from mainstream parties as well as from outside the party fold, including figures such as Philip Dwyer, an anti-immigration activist who has attended and filmed protests at accommodation centres, who is contesting the election for Ireland First.

Dr Umar Al-Qadri, the Muslim cleric and chairperson of the Irish Muslim Council who practices as an imam in Blanchardstown, is running as an Independent candidate.

Sitting MEPs Clare Daly (Independents 4 Change), Barry Andrews (Fianna Fáil) and Ciarán Cuffe (Green Party) are also seeking re-election, alongside TDs Bríd Smith (People Before Profit) and Aodhan Ó Riordain (Labour Party). Sinéad Gibney, the former chief commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, is running for the Social Democrats.
