Keith Duggan on the caucus trail

Listen | 22:12

As predicted, Donald Trump was the overwhelming first choice to be the Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election among Iowa’s Republicans in what was the most bitterly cold caucus night on record.

The other key contenders in this opening round of the nomination process, Ron de Santis and Nikki Haley, came a distant second and third, raising questions about the viability of their campaigns.

With this landslide victory behind him, is Trump on a clear run to win the Republican ticket?

Keith Duggan is the new Irish Times Washington correspondent and he was in Iowa for the vote. He talks to Bernice Harrison on today’s In the News podcast about whether there is anyone or anything that can now stop Trump’s procession to the nomination and a potential rematch with President Joe Biden.
