Sir, - Plans are well under way for the many sponsored swims that will take place over Christmas. People young and old are busy collecting sponsorship and in return they will brave the sea, rivers and lakes on Christmas Day, Stephen's Day or New Years Day. Many deserving charitable causes will benefit from their efforts. With a little "safety awareness" from organisers and participants, an enjoyable occasion can be had without injury or loss of life. However, be mindful that last Christmas the rescue services were called to assist people in difficulties during such sponsored swims.
Organisers should be ever conscious of the dangers inherent in entering either cold or rough waters. It is essential that for every event safety officer is appointed with the full authority to call off or terminate the event, for example in deteriorating weather conditions or rough seas.
The Irish Coast Guard (01-6620922 or 01-6620923) should always be informed of events in advance, as well as the local Garda and other life-saving organisations.
Sponsored competitors must be mindful of their own safety when entering into the water. Never underestimate the strength of waves; the smallest can sweep you off your feet and put you in imminent danger.
Remember that the water temperature will be well down on summer levels. Therefore, there is a danger from hypothermia, especially if you have been standing around on cold cement, grass or rocks beforehand.
Never go swimming if you have excessive amounts of alcohol taken, even on the night before the swim. If for any reason you feel unwell, never enter the water. Pocket your pride and swim on another day for those who sponsored you.
Finally, spectators should not encourage swimmers to undertake tasks beyond their capabilities. Stay well back from the water's edge, which may be very slippery at this time of year. Young children should always be under parental control.
With these few precautions, we can do our bit for the many deserving charitable causes with no injury or loss of life.
