Michael Ryan, who died on January 23rd, established a reputation as an outstanding executive in the course of his career in the public and semi-state service. His special combination of high intellectual ability, unselfishness and good humour inspired anyone associated with him to do their very best. He got things done, and done well.

Admired for his fearless integrity and interpersonal skills, he was an outspoken champion for innovation and change.

Michael's parents died when he was a boy. Rockwell College provided a temporary home and Michael retained a link with Rockwell all his life. Michael worked first in Revenue, then Finance. In 1978 he was appointed as a principal officer in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

He held a succession of senior appointments; in every area he brought practical leadership and a passionate advocacy for high standards. He was appointed company secretary of Telecom Eireann in July 1992, and from then until his untimely death he gave its board a unique service.

Michael's beloved wife Elsie and his daughters Elaine, Noreen and Elizabeth have, together with his brother John and his family, lost a special friend and mentor. Michael was a man you could trust totally. Such men are special.
